NEW YORK, Aug. 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Renowned ophthalmologist and dry eye specialist Mina Massaro-Giordano, MD, has been appointed to head NYU Langone Health's newly established Dry Eye Service in the Department of Ophthalmology.
With more than 25 years dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of dry eye, Dr. Massaro-Giordano brings a long-standing commitment to both patient care and scientific innovation. She will see patients at the NYU Langone Eye Center, in Manhattan.

In her new role, Dr. Massaro-Giordano, as director of dry eye services, will deliver an in-demand specialty that will enable comprehensive, integrated care for patients.

Early in Dr. Massaro-Giordano's career, she questioned the narrow understanding of dry eye. Her mother, a seamstress for New York City women, endured the debilitating condition that interfered with her daily life and work, yet her symptoms were frequently dismissed by doctors. Witnessing this firsthand, Dr. Massaro-Giordano was inspired to improve access to care and advance treatments for the condition.
Dr. Massaro-Giordano earned her medical degree from Temple University and completed her residency at the University of Pennsylvania, where she has served on the faculty for 27 years, attaining the rank of professor of ophthalmology in 2016.
During her time at UPenn, she helped establish the Penn Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Center, raising critical funds to support advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies. The center evolved into an interdisciplinary hub, bringing together a wide range of specialties—both within and beyond ophthalmology—such as cornea, oculoplastic, rheumatology, dermatology, pain medicine, among other disciplines. She was an elected member of the Academy of Master Clinicians, the highest clinical honor for UPenn physicians.
Dr. Massaro-Giordano's research interests include advancing treatments for ocular surface diseases, with a special focus on the underlying neural and inflammatory components of dry eye and related conditions. She has led and participated in multiple U.S. Federal Drug Administration trials, including the successful approval of Oxervate, an eye-drop medication that helps nerves grow and heal.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Massaro-Giordano has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in top-tier journals such as Nature Medicine, JAMA Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and The Ocular Surface.
Her influence extends both nationally and internationally. She lectures globally and actively participates in several societies, including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society, among others.
