Renowned Sports Consulting Firm Strikes Again by Cashing $625,815 Ticket on Heat Championship
Company Wagered $250,326 at 5:2 Odds on December 24, 2011
BALTIMORE, June 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ATS Consultants, one of the nation's leading sports investment firms, today announced it had cashed a ticket worth $625,815 based on the Miami Heat winning the 2012 NBA championship.
The Baltimore-based business collected on a $250,326 pre-season wager – the largest ever made by the firm – placed on the Heat at 5:2 odds at the MGM Grand, a Las Vegas casino, on December 24, 2011.
"We made this significant wager for a few reasons," said Jordan Runco, CEO of ATS Consultants. "Our consultants were adamant that the Heat were ready to begin what could be a string of championships starting with the 2011-12 season. We also projected the Heat should have been 2:1 favorites. That extra 25% value we received makes a meaningful difference in this type of situation, considering the size of the wager and the confidence we had. We also hoped that such a successfully large wager would draw attention to some of our other recent investments."
The wager represents the latest in a series of big wins for ATS Consultants and their clients that include:
- $1,107,172 collected on a pre-season wager based on the New York Giants winning the 2012 Super Bowl. ATS thought the Giants should have been listed at 8:1 odds instead of 22:1 and risked $50,326 on the team. After the Giants made it to the Super Bowl, the firm hedged its bet by investing $274,000 to win $200,000 (with a -137 money line) to guarantee a $149,674 profit (considering the cost of the ticket) if New England won, or an $833,172 profit if New York won.
- $206,520 from a $10,326 wager on Ryan Newman winning the 2012 Goody's Fast Relief 500. With six top-5's and nine top-10's at Martinsville and a 5th place qualifying spot, Newman offered tremendous value at 20:1. Additionally, the Stewart-Haas team had already won 2 of the first 5 races for the year with teammate Tony Stewart winning at Las Vegas and Fontana.
- $561,000 collected on Super Saver at odds of 8:1 winning the 2010 Kentucky Derby ($20,000 to win and a $5000 exacta box Super Saver with Ice Box). Most of ATS' outcome scenarios indicated that Super Saver would get a dream trip with jockey Calvin Borel, sitting off a projected suicide pace on a sloppy track that was likely to falter down the lane. ATS also predicted the deep closer Ice Box to rally for place.
"While we're not always right with these large wagers, we do have a history of success with them," said Runco. "And we have the winning tickets to prove it. We look for strategic opportunities that make a lot of sense from both a sports and betting perspective, and then act accordingly. It's a formula that's worked well for us and our clients for over 20 years."
Runco added that the wagers include an extra $326 to each of its bet to honor his late grandmother (born on 3/26) and her fondness of sports betting.
