Disney's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" continued its record-breaking sprint, adding another $145.93 million this past weekend globally. The film began its box office journey in China on Saturday, bringing in $52.4 million over the two-day weekend and making it the highest Saturday/Sunday opening of all-time in that country. The box office juggernaut is now the third-highest grossing movie of all-time on a worldwide basis (with $1,733.4 billion) after just 26 days in cinemas.
FOX's awards season favorite, "The Revenant," starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, is off to a blazing wide-release start, taking in an impressive $58.2 million globally this weekend in theaters across just 11 territories around the globe. It also took the number two spot this weekend in North America, chasing close behind "Star Wars."
"Star Wars" fever continues on the small screen as "The Star Wars Trilogy" lead the way in DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales and is getting an obvious boost from the attention paid to the latest installment now breaking box office records in theaters around the world.
FOX's "The Martian" was a major hit on the big screen late last year and enjoyed a solid showing at "The Golden Globe Awards" this past weekend. It is no surprise that the Matt Damon acting tour-de-force directed by Ridley Scott topped our latest digital movies sales and rentals chart.
In TV engagement for broadcast and cable, NBC's "Saturday Night Live" leads the way, having aired its last episode of 2015 on Dec. 19. The "A Hillary Christmas" clip was the top performer with 2.35M views.
