Research and Education Technology Leaders to Convene in Washington, D.C. for Internet2 Global Summit

The Global Summit is Internet2's annual meeting that showcases how the research and education (R&E) community is transforming the way research and scholarship are conceived and conducted. Nearly 1,000 attendees are expected for the 2015 meeting, which will focus on the advancement of research capabilities through collaborative innovations in IT infrastructure and applications.

Centered on the theme "Community: Leading the Way," the Global Summit will feature keynote addresses from top R&E leaders, more than 100 presentations from noted technology experts, and sessions focused on global partnerships and innovative technology in the areas of advanced networking, cloud services, trust and identity, cybersecurity and applied research.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

General Sessions
Noted luminaries in R&E will headline three separate general sessions covering topics ranging from collaborative research to Internet governance to the future of digital technology.

Monday, April 27, 1:15 – 2:30 p.m.

• Keynote: "Outlook for the Future of Research Institutions," Freeman Hrabowski, president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County
• Other activities include a President's Panel discussion on Hrabowski's presentation, moderated by University of Maryland System Chancellor William "Brit" Kirwan and including panelists Hrabowski; Molly Broad, president, American Council on Education; David Lassner, president, University of Hawaii System and Michael McRobbie, president, Indiana University.

Tuesday, April 28, 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

• Keynote: "Global Internet Governance and the Multistakeholder Model," Lawrence E. Strickling, assistant secretary for communications and information and administrator, National Telecommunications and Information Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce
• Also in this session, the Internet2 Richard Rose Award and Gender Diversity Awards will be presented and Margo Day, vice president of U.S. education at Microsoft, will present on machine learning and big data in the U.S. education industry, as well as share her personal experiences working to build college and career skills with secondary students in Kenya.

Wednesday, April 29, 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

• Keynote: "Vision for a Digital Future," Mario Vecchi, chief technology officer, PBS
• Vecchi's keynote will be accompanied by a 4K ultra-high definition video presentation shown in a large-screen format, featuring two unique stories highlighting how technology enhances learning in rural schools, enables collaboration in the astronomy community and helps to educate and build knowledge on the Big Island of Hawaii.
