Resources from the Highmark Caring Place are Available to Help Grieving Children and Families Cope During the Holiday Season

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- While the holiday season is a time that many people celebrate with family and friends, it can be particularly difficult for those grieving the death of a loved one. Resources from the Highmark Caring Place, A Center for Grieving Children, Adolescents and Their Families are available during the holiday season, and year round. In addition to online resources that are offered at no cost, the Caring Place offers peer support groups and referral services, also at no cost, for those who are experiencing feelings of sadness and loneliness following a death.

The Caring Place encourages people in need everywhere to view an online publication, "Coping With Grief at the Holidays," to discover a variety of basic tips to help children and their families along their journey of dealing with grief during the holiday season.

"After a family member dies, holidays are never the same, and when a loved one dies, every day is difficult," said Terese Vorsheck, Highmark Caring Place director. "The holidays, and the anticipation of the holidays, can intensify feelings of grief. Children don't just 'get over' grief, but frequently need time to learn to cope with their loss and the many other changes that often occur following a death."

The Highmark Caring Place provides children and adults with encouragement from others who have also experienced a death. This support gives them the opportunity to learn that they are not alone in their grief.

"We are always looking for new ways to raise awareness of the needs of grieving children, and we encourage people everywhere to do the same," said Ms. Vorsheck. "This year in Pittsburgh, for example, we installed a memory wall that allows children and families to write their own thoughts and memories of a loved one, or a message of support to children who are grieving the loss of someone close to them."

Programs and services are offered at four Caring Place locations in Pennsylvania –Pittsburgh, Erie, Lemoyne and Warrendale.

In addition to its onsite programs at the Caring Place facilities, adult telephone support and educational programs and resources are available. Consultation services and educational presentations and resources are also available for schools and other professionals who work with children.
