Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA) Calls on Nevada Lawmakers to Act Swiftly for the More Than 314,000 Nevadans Who Voted Yes on 3

DALLAS, Nov. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA), a national group of retail energy suppliers, is calling on the Nevada legislature and governor-elect to act swiftly to pass a bill giving the more than 314,000 people who voted YES on Question 3, Nevada's Energy Choice Initiative, the ability to choose their electric service providers. Until such a bill is passed, RESA is also asking that lawmakers and voters alike hold NV Energy accountable for the many promises it has made to Nevada families.

"For RESA, this election has always been about what is right for consumers," said Darrin Pfannenstiel, RESA President. "History and 13 other U.S. states show us that competition creates better prices, allows for innovation and even creates jobs. But ultimately, it's about the right to choose and Nevadans, like other Americans, deserve that right whether it be now, or in the future."

RESA is also calling on Nevada legislators to investigate the exorbitant amount of campaign dollars spent by the No on 3 Campaign. Based upon campaign finance filings, NV Energy spent more than $63 million dollars since the 2016 vote to retain its hold on Nevada ratepayers. In a state of under 3 million people, an important question for lawmakers now is, why would a regulated utility spend that much money if its returns were flat and limited?

"While RESA members are disappointed in the outcome, we are not shocked," said Pfannenstiel. "Opponents to choice, competition and free enterprise spent a great deal of time and money attempting to scare voters with false claims about risks, reliability and costs. Now that the election is over, we hope that NV Energy will keep its end of the bargain."

Among the campaign claims RESA hopes Nevadans will demand NV Energy meet:

• The promise to keep in place the 50 existing and planned clean energy projects it says it has across the state.
• The promise to keep Nevada's current rooftop solar program.
• The claims of low rates for all Nevadans – after all of NV Energy's promised renewable projects are completed and in rates.
• The promise of nation-leading reliability of service based on false claims that competition hurts reliability.
• Reduced rates for schools and universities in line with the offers made to those institutions from alternative suppliers – and without fees.
