1 сентября 2017 года крупнейший в мире рентгеновский лазер ― European XFEL ― начинает функционировать в штатном режиме. В проекте создания этой экспериментальной установки стоимостью 1,22 млрд евро на территории региона-метрополии Гамбург участвуют 11 европейских стран.

Построенный комплекс является поистине "объектом достижений": генерируя ежесекундно 27 тысяч рентгеновских импульсов со свойствами лазерного излучения, в миллиард раз превосходящего по яркости излучение, обеспечиваемое лучшими традиционными рентгеновскими источниками, XFEL открывает принципиально новые возможности для исследований, помогая существенно расширить границы нынешней научно-исследовательской деятельности. Он позволит ученым разных стран расшифровывать молекулярный состав вирусов и клеток, получать трехмерные изображения объектов наномира, производить съемку химических реакций и изучать процессы, происходящие в глубине планет. В частности, XFEL будет помогать в разработке новых медикаментов и других материалов.

В эту пятницу пройдет церемония открытия данного объекта, в которой примут участие Федеральный министр образования и научных исследований Германии Йоханна Ванка (Johanna Wanka), первый бургомистр Гамбурга Олаф Шольц (Olaf Scholz), министр науки земли Шлезвиг-Гольштейн Карин Приен (Karin Prien), советник президента России Андрей Фурсенко, французский министр исследований Фредери́к Вида́ль (Frédérique Vidal) и другие высокопоставленные лица. Кроме того, на открытии центра будет присутствовать ряд сторонних исследователей, которые в настоящее время готовятся к своим первым экспериментам, намеченным на середину сентября.

XFEL ― некоммерческая организация, тесно сотрудничающая с гамбургской лабораторией DESY и другими международными учреждениями. Ее штат насчитывает около 300 человек. Эта туннельная система длиной 3,4 км, простирающаяся до территории земли Шлезвиг-Гольштейн, на строительство и ввод в действие которой затрачено 1,22 млрд евро, входит в число самых крупных и амбициозных исследовательских проектов Европы. Участниками проекта являются 11 стран, а именно Дания, Франция, Германия, Венгрия, Италия, Польша, Россия, Словакия, Испания, Швеция, Швейцария; в настоящее время к ним присоединяется Великобритания. Для Гамбурга как научно-делового города реализация проекта XFEL знаменует очередной этап становления в качестве международного инновационного центра.
