Hampton University Museum, the nation's oldest African American museum, will welcome Ruth E. Carter Afrofuturism in Costume Design HOMECOMING!, a celebrated exhibition showcasing Carter's groundbreaking artistry and cultural influence, on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The exhibition brings Carter's extraordinary body of work home to the institution that helped shape her artistic journey, creating a powerful convergence of Black history, cinematic excellence, cultural preservation and future possibilities.

Carter's return carries a significance that extends beyond the exhibition gallery. She made history as the first African American to win the Academy Award for Costume Design, earning the honor for her work on Black Panther in 2019. In 2023, she won her second Oscar for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, becoming the first Black woman to win two Academy Awards. She subsequently became the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history and made another historic mark as the first Black costume designer to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
