Schneider Electric Issues American Business Act on Climate Pledge
Company commits to assist 50 million underprivileged people obtain low carbon lighting and communication systems and invest over $11 billion over 10 years on innovative sustainability R&D
WASHINGTON, Oct. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation, announced it attended today's White House Summit on Climate and the Road through Paris and issued a climate commitment pledge in line with the American Business Act on Climate.
Today's Summit gathered leaders from government, private sector, academic, technical and scientific communities to focus on cross-sector efforts to tackle the climate change challenge in the United States and around the world. Additionally, participants discussed how to further engage and organize in support of the upcoming COP21 Paris climate negotiations.
At the event, Schneider Electric announced that it has made an American Business Act on Climate Pledge, joining more than 60 companies from across the American economy that are standing with the Obama Administration to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to climate action and to voice support for a strong outcome to the COP21 Paris climate negotiations.

In this context, we support the completion of a climate change agreement in Paris that takes a strong step forward toward a low-carbon, sustainable future," said Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Schneider Electric Chairman and CEO.
Schneider Electric's climate commitment pledge is as follows:
- Achieve 10 percent energy savings by the end of 2017 by reducing the company's energy intensity
- 120,000 tons of CO2 avoided through end-of-life products by the end of 2017
- 75 percent of products in R&D to be designed as Green Premium, with an ecolabel, and 75 percent of product revenue to come from Green Premium by the end of 2017
- Zero waste to landfill in 100 industrial sites by the end of 2017
- 50 million underprivileged people obtaining lighting and communication systems with low carbon solutions by 2025 through the Access to Energy program
- Invest over $11 billion over 10 years on R&D innovation in sustainability
In addition to ongoing sustainability efforts at Schneider Electric, and on top of its commitments in today's pledge, Schneider Electric works with thousands of global customers to reduce their energy consumption and improve energy efficiency. Several U.S. examples include:
- The Davis School District in Utah comprises 59 elementary schools, 16 junior high schools, 11 high schools plus administrative facilities – more than 90 buildings and over 10 million square feet of space in all. Working with Schneider Electric's Building Management Systems, the district has seen its square footage grow 18 percent in two years – and its energy consumption reduced by 7 percent during that same period.
- North Carolina State University (NCSU) boasts an enrollment of 34,000 students. Schneider Electric was selected by NCSU to reduce energy consumption, drive the energy-related upgrades needed for campus buildings and ultimately save the university significant money in its annual utility costs. By using a combination of digital solutions, lighting upgrades, solar thermal heating, and an overall energy management system, these results are being realized – with the additional benefit of reducing NCSU's carbon footprint by 37 percent.
- The City of Boston is working with Schneider Electric's integrated software applications for energy management and sustainability. Schneider was selected as the Enterprise Energy Management System for all city operations. Solutions enable the city to better track, manage and report on electricity, natural gas, water, wastewater, and other data sources at both the enterprise and individual meter level. The City of Boston operation is large and complex, and is using Schneider Electric to help monitor and manage a wide network that includes:
- 350 facilities
- 64,000 street lights and traffic lights at 850 intersections
- All 3,100 vehicles and buses in its vehicle fleet
