Students head to China, France, Italy and Spain to study abroad in high school
LAWRENCE, Mass., Sept. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- School Year Abroad (SYA) is pleased to announce that the SYA Class of 2013 has arrived in each of their four schools in China, France, Italy, and Spain. SYA is a yearlong high school academic study abroad program which allows students to live with a host family for an entire academic year while earning high school credit and preparing for admission to selective U.S. colleges and universities.
SYA's Class of 2013 is comprised of 262 high school juniors and seniors from over 37 states and 5 foreign countries. These students come from 100 independent, parochial and public schools. Each country also boasts two Merit Scholars, students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievements. This year, SYA awarded a total of $160,000 in merit scholarships to these students, and over $3 million in need-based financial aid has been awarded to this year's class.
"We're delighted to welcome this group of highly-qualified students to our schools," said Director of Admissions Rachel Keegan Kelley. "The caliber of this year's class is admirable in terms of academic, extracurricular and civic achievements. They are a wonderful group of students who will benefit greatly from this cultural and linguistic immersion experience."
High school students in good standing from any accredited American high school may apply to spend their junior or senior year with School Year Abroad. Students applying to SYA France in Rennes, or SYA Spain in Zaragoza must be currently enrolled in at least level II of French or Spanish. SYA China and SYA Italy however, accept applications from students of all levels, including those who would like to begin the study of Mandarin or Italian. Applications for next year's class will soon be available online at www.sya.org.
