This is the seventh annual FT 400 list, produced independently by the Financial Times in collaboration with Ignites Research, a subsidiary of the FT that provides business intelligence on investment management.

To qualify, advisors needed 10 years' experience, $300 million assets under management (AUM) and under 60% of AUM with institutional clients. The FT requests a list of qualified advisors from some of the largest U.S. brokerages. These advisors are invited to apply for the ranking – only advisors who submit an online application are considered. In 2019, roughly 960 applications were received and 400 selected (41.7%). Qualified advisers were scored on six attributes: AUM, AUM growth rate, compliance record, years of experience, industry certifications, and online accessibility. AUM accounts for 60-70% of the score. To provide diversity, the FT capped the number of advisors from any one state based on the distribution of millionaires across the U.S. The ranking may not be representative of any one client's experience, is not an endorsement, and is not indicative of advisor's future performance.
