Search Interest in PDRN Has Surged. Here's What the Evidence Says About 'Salmon DNA' Skincare

GREAT NECK, N.Y., Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Google Trends data indicate that relative search interest for 'PDRN' in the U.S. increased 650% over the one-year period analyzed. Ahrefs data shows a similar pattern: the term itself is up 119%, "what is pdrn" is up 131%, and "pdrn cream" searches have climbed 371%.

What Is PDRN, and Why Is It Called "Salmon DNA"?
PDRN, or polydeoxyribonucleotide, refers to a preparation of purified DNA fragments traditionally derived from salmonid sources. That origin is also where the viral "salmon sperm facial" name comes from, which is a description built for attention rather than accuracy.

The clinical ingredient and the viral nickname describe the same material, but only one of those names explains what it actually does.

According to Google Trends, U.S. searches over the past year rose for product terms that use the clinical name and fell for "salmon pdrn":

As interest in PDRN products has grown, interest in the "salmon" framing specifically has fallen. Consumers appear to be searching for the ingredient by its actual name more than the headline-grabbing one.

What Can a PDRN Serum Realistically Do, and What Can't It?
Until recently, the evidence behind topical PDRN was thin. That changed with a 2026 study in PLOS ONE, a randomized, double-blind trial of 31 women aged 35 to 55 who used a 0.1% PDRN eye cream on one side of the face and a matched retinol cream on the other for 28 days.

The PDRN side showed a 20% to 23% reduction in crow's-feet wrinkle area, compared with 6% to 7% for retinol, along with roughly double the improvement in skin elasticity, firmness, and dermal thickness.

No adverse reactions were reported in the study. That's one formulation, one concentration, and one small trial, not proof every PDRN product works the same way.

A 2026 systematic review identified seven eligible randomized trials involving 183 participants across skin rejuvenation, scar prevention, and wound-healing applications.

The review called the results promising, particularly for wound healing, but flagged small sample sizes and inconsistent protocols. A single eye cream study doesn't mean every PDRN serum on the shelf works the same way.

Serums vs. Injections: Why the Evidence Isn't Interchangeable
Separately, clinical evidence exists for injectable PDRN and polynucleotide treatments. In one split-face trial, 27 people received PN filler injections on one side and a hyaluronic acid filler on the other, around the eyes.

Overall aesthetic scores didn't differ significantly, although the PN side showed greater improvement in elasticity, hydration, and pore appearance on some measures, with no serious adverse events.

That evidence describes an injected product placed into tissue and not a cream applied to intact skin. No topical PDRN product sold as a cosmetic is the same thing as a clinical injectable.

Using PDRN Around Laser Hair Removal or Electrolysis
Skin just treated with laser hair removal or electrolysis is more sensitive than usual, so most practitioners recommend keeping aftercare simple, a gentle, hydrating product rather than introducing several new actives at once.

There is not yet enough evidence to say that a topical PDRN product provides a specific advantage after laser hair removal or electrolysis. Once the initial aftercare period has passed, any new product should be introduced cautiously.

Choosing a PDRN Product Wisely
A product containing PDRN isn't automatically interchangeable with another one. Concentration, formulation, and what else is in the product all affect whether it does anything measurable.

Before trying a new PDRN product, especially on recently treated or sensitive skin, patch testing and checking the full ingredient list matter more than whether "PDRN" appears on the front of the label.
