DELAFIELD, Wis., July 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Five Fifty Fifty Run/Walk for Mental Health raised over $150,000 for mental health education and services in its sophomore year. Over 3,000 runners and walkers participated this year, a 55% increase over 2018's numbers.
Dr. Adel Korkor, a nephrologist from Wisconsin and founder of the event, again completed a 5K in all 50 states in 50 days, showcasing his foundation's commitment to expand mental health awareness nationwide and make the world a better place for those suffering from mental illness.
In each state, Korkor shared his key facts: mental health problems are common nationwide, disabling and costly, impeding physical health and significantly increasing morbidity and mortality in all sufferers.
Korkor's purpose behind running a 5K in every state in just 50 days is to create a movement that will spread from coast to coast. "In each state, people shared their stories with me and the other participants," Dr. Korkor explained. "We're making a difference here and even more so as more people participate and become aware of our cause across the nation."
The funds raised are used to increase awareness, address the shortage of affordable care, emphasize the importance of wellness in mental health, fund research and focus on underserved groups such as veterans and those suffering from addiction.
The Five Fifty Fifty Run/Walk Series for Mental Health launched April 27 in Honolulu, Hawaii and concluded June 15 in Korkor's home state of Wisconsin.
Mental Health America served as the national charity partner of the Five Fifty Fifty Run/Walk Series.
