ONTARIO, Calif., Nov. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Prem Reddy, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Prime Healthcare, today released the following statement:
"Today's announcement by the Service Employees International Union Local 121RN to back Prime Healthcare's acquisition of the Daughters of Charity Health System extends the support of thousands of patients, staff, nurses and doctors committed to preserving needed access to quality healthcare and saving the DCHS hospitals from closure.
"SEIU 121RN joins the growing movement supportive of a DCHS decision that found Prime Healthcare to be 'by far the best choice' in extending the system's legacy of providing compassionate care and service to the community. The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United earlier provided its endorsement. The SEIU 121RN nurses represent 8,500 nurses in Southern California, including more than 130 nurses at Encino Hospital Medical Center, which is owned and operated by the not-for-profit Prime Healthcare Foundation.
"This expanding group of supporters recognizes the importance of preserving safety-net hospitals and the jobs and essential care they provide in communities throughout California. The only opposition that continues is from self-serving interest groups that do not value the importance of these hospitals, such as the SEIU-UHW. Their actions jeopardize the future of the DCHS hospitals and neglect the best interests of members, patients and communities.
"Prime Healthcare's acquisition of the DCHS hospitals not only will save these facilities for their communities, but it will also keep critical emergency rooms and trauma centers open, infuse $150 million in capital improvements, protect 7,600 jobs, continue all charity care and assume nearly $300 million in pension guarantees for more than 17,000 union and non-union active and retired workers."
