Server Sales Rise 7 Percent in 2015, Strongest Performance Since 2011, According to Dell'Oro Group

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., March 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In a recently published report from Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center IT industries, results showed server sales rose 7 percent in 2015, the strongest performance since 2011, when the market was recovering from a global recession. Shipments to Microsoft and Facebook surged while shipments to Google and Amazon paused.

"Revenue growth in 2015 was driven by richer configuration of Grantley-based enterprise servers and IBM's Z13 refresh cycle, which started early in the year. In contrast, unit shipment growth continues to be driven mainly by Cloud data center deployments," said Sameh Boujelbene, Director at Dell'Oro Group. "Nevertheless, Cloud server shipment growth slowed in 2015 as some of the leading Cloud providers, namely Google and Amazon, paused CAPEX spend during the year. Looking at 2016, we see two factors that could increase server shipments: each of the Cloud customers announced plans to increase CAPEX; and we believe that a weakening macro economy would prompt Enterprises to accelerate Cloud adoption."

The report shows how growth of white box servers slowed down in 2015, as well as the performance of Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Huawei, Lenovo, and Supermicro. The report also discusses about the expansion of white box server vendors beyond Tier 1 Cloud data centers.
