Seven INTREN Departments Reach One Year Without Incident by Embracing Safety Culture

UNION, Ill., March 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In the past seven months, INTREN has documented seven departments who have reached one year without any significant safety or operational incidents, a rare milestone within the energy industry.

Starting with communication, INTREN has successfully improved crew members' interactions on the jobsite and throughout the company. Changes were made to reduce the size of safety meetings to increase engagement and focus on specific work-type challenges, as well as establish a streamlined approach for crew members to collaborate and execute on innovative ideas. The daily job brief was improved using our employees' ideas to create more open conversations about jobsite hazards and an ability to list barriers they plan to use.

INTREN also developed a more detailed and targeted safety training matrix that identifies three critical aspects:

• Customer-specific
• OSHA-required

In 2016, we implemented our new Safety Net audit tool, which incorporates our list of industry-wide issues we need to be focused on to ensure work is completed in the safest manner and at the highest quality. This new tool allows easy entry of all our findings with an ability to run and share reports that target our improvement needs real time.
