Sign the Declaration of Independence from Technology!
The Unplugging and Reconnecting Challenge
NEW YORK, July 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Last week, Unplugging and Reconnecting™ (U&R) launched a campaign to "Declare Your Independence from Technology!" to encourage people to take a step back from their increasingly addictive connection with their technology and to reconnect with loved ones.
An interactive Declaration of Independence from Technology was posted for people to read and sign. Signees could also sign and print their own Personal Declaration and vow to break free from the (increasingly tyrannical) bonds of their technological devices.
The revolution is now underway - hundreds of people have since signed and have included comments of agreement from 'Amen!' and 'Rock on!' to vows to 'enjoy time with their kids' and to 'not use the computer, watch TV, or play video games.'
Last weekend at the South Street Seaport, U&R brought the Declaration to the people. The response was overwhelming and hundreds more were drawn to our "revolutionaries" in colonial garb and eagerly signed on.
This Sunday, July 10th, U&R was invited to participate in the NYPD/PBBS Brooklyn Unity Showcase, at Prospect Park from 11:30 am – 4:30 to sign the Declaration and get gifts.
We plan to present this petition to the leaders of Technology (Google, Apple, etc.) and to our representatives in Congress and the White House in order to underscore the impact technology may have on our children, professional and personal relationships. "I see the insidious nature of social media, gaming and apps as having the potential to become the 'addiction of our time,'" said Dr. Joseph Geliebter, clinical psychologist and founder of Unplugging and Reconnecting™.
At U&R, we do love technology and the benefits it provides, but we also recognize that we have begun to lose control of the very technology designed to enhance and simplify our lives. The complete saturation of social media and gadgetry has infiltrated every single moment of our lives, from insidious addictive apps and games, to reflexive email/Facebook/Twitter checking.
