LOS ANGELES, Feb. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Silvus Technologies, the leader in military-grade multi-antenna wireless communications, has been awarded Phase II of a Navy SBIR to improve Command and Control information sharing to warfighters on battleships.
Commanders onboard ships rely on timely information to make crucial decisions to execute their warfare missions. The availability of tactical information is currently limited to the Combat Information Center (CIC) and other select compartments, preventing timely decisions if key personnel are on the move and limiting their mobility within the ship. The innovative multicast video distribution system under development will make tactical information accessible at consoles as well as portable tablets for secure information sharing anywhere within Navy ships. Having the flexibility to view the information at any console, video wall, or secure portable tablet allows for Commanders and watch standers to make timely decisions based on having all information available when needed.
"Silvus radios have been used for connecting SATCOM terminals to the command center several decks below on an active destroyer; our vision is to mature the technology to provide seamless wireless connectivity and situational awareness to warfighters anywhere within warships," said Mike Fitz, Chief Technology Officer for Silvus Technologies. The key challenges being addressed through this effort are:
- Low transmit power on active warships
- Transmissions through watertight bulkheads
- Seamless handoffs for warfighters moving across compartments
Silvus plans to provide a complete system available for testing at a land based warfare system test site and support installation and deployment aboard a navy ship for an at-sea test during an exercise.
