Social Travel Company Where I've Been(TM) Raises Capital From Lightbank
CHICAGO, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading social travel network Where I've Been, architect of one of the most downloaded applications on Facebook, has received an additional round of funding from Lightbank, the recently launched investment vehicle created by Groupon founders Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell. Whereivebeen.com and its Facebook application, named a top ten favorite by TechCrunch, allows members to chart their past, present and future travel plans while discovering destinations and deals for their next adventure.
With this new infusion of capital, Where I've Been will aggressively expand its current user base of more than 9 million registered users who have contributed nearly a half a billion global travel intents via its interactive map. Where I've Been's destination site and platform have been built around its proprietary back-end software, which allows users not only to capture their travel history and intentions, but also to share their maps and profile with their social networks.
"Where I've Been exemplifies our strategy of identifying innovative and disruptive business models," said Lefkofsky. "With its rich user data, including travel intentions and high user engagement, Where I've Been has enormous potential to change the landscape of the travel industry."
Rob Solomon, Groupon's new president and COO, who is relocating to Chicago from Silicon Valley, sits on the Where I've Been advisory board. Solomon was most recently a partner at Technology Crossover Ventures, a Palo Alto-based venture capital firm, and previously served as president and CEO of SideStep and as senior vice president at Yahoo!
"As a Chicago newcomer, it's exciting to see the breadth of entrepreneurial talent here," said Solomon. "Companies like Groupon and Where I've Been are making this city a vibrant hub for innovative technology startups looking for breakout growth."
