Solar Energy Expert John Hrudicka Explains How Solar Battery Backup Supports Home Energy Security in HelloNation

The article explains how solar energy and battery storage can provide backup power for important household needs when the electrical grid is unavailable.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- How can solar and battery backup support home energy security? A recent HelloNation article featuring insights from John Hrudicka of Renew Solar Solutions in Nashville, Tennessee, explains how a properly designed solar and battery system can provide stored energy for important household needs during a power outage.

The article explains that solar panels alone do not necessarily provide electricity when grid power goes down. Most standard grid-connected solar systems shut down during an outage as a safety measure that prevents electricity from being sent onto power lines while utility crews may be making repairs. Homeowners who want backup power generally need battery storage as part of their system.

According to the article, a properly designed solar and battery system can generate electricity, store energy at the home, and provide backup power when the grid is unavailable. Stored energy can be directed to selected parts of the house, giving homeowners another source of electricity until utility service is restored.

Determining which household needs should remain powered is an important part of planning for home energy security. Refrigerators, lights, internet equipment, security systems, and selected outlets may be priorities for some homeowners, while others may want to include heating, cooling, or larger appliances. These choices can significantly affect the amount of battery storage required.

The article emphasizes that battery capacity must be matched with household energy needs and available solar production. Every battery can store a limited amount of energy, and operating larger appliances or more equipment will use that stored energy more quickly. Prioritizing essential electrical needs can help backup power last longer during an outage.

Solar production can also play an important role in extending backup power. During a daytime outage, solar panels may generate electricity that helps recharge battery storage. However, the article notes that solar battery backup does not provide unlimited electricity. Weather, season, shade, time of day, and nighttime conditions all influence how much solar energy is available.

The amount of time backup power lasts also varies from one household to another. Battery size and energy consumption both affect backup duration. A home using stored energy primarily for a refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and a security system will have different requirements than a home attempting to power heating, cooling, or other large appliances.

The article recommends conducting an energy review before designing the system. A solar contractor can evaluate normal household energy use and discuss which equipment homeowners want to keep operating during an outage. This information can help determine the appropriate amount of battery storage for those priorities.

Homeowners are also encouraged to ask what a proposed solar and battery system will actually power during an outage and how long the battery may last based on expected energy use. Understanding how sunlight and solar production affect backup time can also help homeowners establish realistic expectations before installation.

The article further explains that home energy security does not necessarily require disconnecting from the utility grid. A home can remain connected during normal conditions while a solar and battery system provides an additional layer of protection when grid electricity becomes temporarily unavailable.

Battery storage can provide benefits outside of outages as well. Solar energy generated during the day can be stored for use later, giving homeowners greater flexibility in managing the electricity their solar panels produce.

The article concludes that solar battery backup is not intended to provide unlimited power or prevent outages from occurring. Instead, a properly planned system can provide another source of electricity when the grid goes down. By considering battery size, household energy use, available sunlight, and the equipment that matters most, homeowners can better understand how solar and battery backup can support home energy security.
