South Florida Doctors Volunteer with No More Tears to Aid Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Victims
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- It's no secret that Miami is currently ranked third in terms of the highest volume of human trafficking cases in the U.S. In the past ten years, South Florida-based nonprofit No More Tears, along with their team of dedicated volunteer medical professionals, have rescued nearly 6,000 victims and helped them start a new life, free from abuse.
"We could not do the work we do without the help of our volunteer medical professionals," said Somy Ali, founder of No More Tears. "Many of our victims sustain serious injuries such as broken jaws, and damaged eye sockets. Their immediate care is vital to ensuring our victims recover."
Four Broward-based doctors volunteer their services to the 10 to 15 victims that No More Tears rescues each and every day. Dr. Wafa Abdulrazzaq of Cooper City provides free eye exams to victims, while Dr. Robert Bass of Plantation is available for free gynecological exams and treatment. Dr. Cynthia Somers of Tamarac provides psychological evaluations, and Dr. Katherine Ferguson of Davie offers free dental services.
"I am always available and willing to volunteer my services to this wonderful organization started by Somy, who is also one of my patients," Dr. Bass says. "My children also volunteer with No More Tears and have been busy planning this year's holiday party for all the children of the victims. For many this will be their first holiday season with presents, food and laughter."
Everyone who helps No More Tears is a volunteer, including Somy Ali. 100 percent of every donation received goes directly to the nonprofit's victims' assistance programs.
"When we aid victims, we not only remove them from their abusive environment; we also help them start a new life so that they never look back," Ali says. "I am grateful for the support of these wonderful physicians who are willing and able to help out."
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, No More Tears is a nonprofit organization founded by Somy Ali. A victim of abuse, Ali moved to Broward County when she was 12, and then at 15 she moved to India to pursue a career in Bollywood.
