South Florida JAZZ Welcomes Influential Brazilian Jazz Trio in Concert February 12, 2011

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- South Florida's premier modern jazz organization is privileged to feature The Brazilian Trio (a.k.a. Trio Rio). Two-thirds of the band comprise the renowned Trio da Paz. This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd in Davie, 33314. Born in Sao Paulo, pianist Helio Alves has performed and recorded with Claudio Roditi, Paquito D'Rivera, Gato Barbieri, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, John Patitucci, Al Foster, Leny Andrade, Rosa Passos, The Caribbean Jazz Project, Joyce, Oscar Castro-Neves, Yo-Yo Ma, Hendrik Meurkens (for SFJ a few seasons ago) and the list does go on. In 1995 he joined Joe Henderson's Double Rainbow Quartet, playing the music of Jobim. He simply is known as "the pianist" in Brazilian jazz circles. His debut album Trios, featuring John Patitucci and Al Foster, was released in 1999. His new CD, It's Clear, is dazzling. It features Trio da Paz guitarist Romero Lumambo. Speaking of TDP, the rest of the trio, premier, first-call bassist Nilson Matta, and the brilliant, masterfully fluent drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, make up the remaining two-thirds of both trios. Matta is still a legend in Brazil, despite having moved to New York in 1985. He is classically trained and was as at home playing with Yo-Yo Ma as with Joe Henderson, Paquito D'Rivera or Mark Murphy. Duduka, a Brazilian jazz icon, can do it all and is the busiest Brazilian-born drummer on two continents. As with TDP, this group is very tight-knit as it plays jazz with that authentic Brazilian lilt that is much copied, but done perfectly by only a few - these guys!

Vic Juris is a veteran guitar chopsmeister with extensive experience in the modern mainstream idiom with roots in jazz-rock fusion. His background is variegated, but he is best known for his work with saxophonists Lee Konitz and Dave Liebman.
