BRUNI, Texas, Jan. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The South Texans Against the Refinery (STAR) Coalition has formed to oppose the newly proposed Raven Petroleum refinery in Duval County.
STAR includes residents, landowners, ranches, and organizations concerned that Raven Petroleum's proposed project in the tri-county area (Duval, Webb, and Jim Hogg counties) will cause numerous health and environmental risks that would threaten local communities including Bruni, Mirando City, Oilton, Aguilares, and Hebbronville.
An informational Community Meeting will be held on Feb. 1 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bruni Community Center (303 12th St, Bruni, TX).
The proposed refinery would be the first of its kind built in the United States since the 1970s. To date, Raven Petroleum has not provided any information regarding its proposed facility.
There are no tangible plans, environmental impact studies, economic feasibility reports, or permit application to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to reference, leaving many unanswered questions that must be brought to light.
It is clear that any refinery will require abundant fresh water, well-prepared emergency services, and cause harmful air pollution, threaten local water supplies, and disrupt area wildlife. The local communities directly affected deserve better jobs, healthy lives, and answers to the many questions raised.
"The unspoiled nature in South Texas is critical to the health of local residents and our economic future. We deserve development that won't harm the health of our local citizens," said Bob Bruni, whose family has owned land in the area for five generations. "It doesn't make sense to build a refinery to produce fuel for Mexico in this part of Texas."
Initial STAR Coalition members include:
- Bob Bruni (landowner)
- Mary Ann Smothers Bruni (landowner)
- Mark Van Es (landowner)
- A.M. Bruni La Coma Ranch
- Breathe South Texas
- Rio Grande International Study Center
