ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 3.2 million temporary and contract workers per week in the second quarter of 2018, according to data released today by the American Staffing Association—the greatest number for any second quarter since 2000.
Staffing employment increased 2.3% in the second quarter of 2018 compared with the same period in 2017, marking the largest year-to-year growth for any quarter in three years.
"Businesses are turning to staffing companies for flexible workforce solutions, which is driving up demand for temporary and contract employees," said Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer. "This means more opportunities for job seekers in an ever-tightening labor market as employers focus on talent as a way to differentiate their businesses."
Temporary and contract staffing sales totaled $34.6 billion in the second quarter of 2018, 4.3% higher than in the same quarter of 2017.
On a quarter-to-quarter basis, staffing employment was up 3.1% from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2018; temporary and contract staffing sales increased 5.3% from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2018.
