Stage IV Cancer Survivor Shares How Illness Reshaped His Faith, Priorities and Perspective
Mark Heisey's debut memoir offers hope, humor and healing for anyone facing life's hardest trials
BOONE, N.C., Oct. 19, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite decades of healthy living, a former pastor and longtime farmer in the North Carolina mountains, Mark Heisy found himself confronting the limits of medicine. In his new book, "How Cancer Cured Me: Dealing with Cancer and Other Stings of Life," Mark Heisey offers a candid account of his battle with double-hit, stage IV-B lymphoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.
The book is not a medical guide to curing cancer but a memoir about how cancer reshaped Heisey's life and faith. Told in short, digestible chapters, Heisey reflects on his experiences, from grueling hospital stays and invasive procedures to moments of prayer and clarity.
Heisey doesn't sugarcoat the horrors of his illness, but he also refuses to let despair define the journey. His shares his reflections so they can serve as a guide not only for those with cancer but for anyone facing deep trials. The title encapsulates the paradox: though cancer sought to destroy his body, it healed his soul.
"Faith is easy when life is easy," Heisey said, "but true faith is tested through hardship. My cancer journey forced me to confront life's fragility and reevaluate my priorities. Rather than ask "Why me?", I chose to give thanks in all things, trusting that God's will was being worked out through my suffering."
Beyond the spiritual insights, Heisey offers practical guidance for cancer patients, such as how to be a good patient, navigate medical systems, and use humor and gratitude to stay grounded. He also offers alternative perspectives on healing, including emotional and spiritual dimensions of wellness.
Heisey ultimately leaves the reader with the challenge to seize life, love well, and live intentionally, even when walking through the valley of the shadow of death.
