LOS ANGELES, May 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C) President and CEO Julian Adams, Ph.D., will speak at a public workshop hosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), titled Cancer & Engineering: The Convergence of Engineering and Health to Advance Cancer Research and Care. The two-day event will be held May 20–21, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
Adams will be a keynote speaker during one of the workshop sessions focused on the role of philanthropy in advancing innovation at the intersection of engineering and oncology. The workshop convenes experts across disciplines to explore how engineering advances and convergent science can reshape cancer research, detection and treatment.
Drawing on SU2C's track record of supporting cross-disciplinary cancer research, Adams will highlight the importance of collaboration to accelerate cancer discoveries and expand access to cutting-edge cancer solutions.
As the cancer research landscape continues to evolve, philanthropic investment plays an increasingly vital role in enabling new breakthroughs and ensuring they reach patients. Adams' participation underscores SU2C's commitment to moving promising discoveries from the lab to the clinic through strategic partnerships and sustained private, public and corporate support—especially at a time when funding gaps risk slowing momentum.
"I'm honored to join this important conversation at the National Academies," said Adams. "Innovation in cancer research increasingly happens at the intersection of biology, data science, engineering and patient advocacy. Breakthroughs are being driven not only in the lab, but also through advances in technology, from imaging and wearable diagnostics to precision tools that improve how we detect, monitor, and treat cancer. SU2C is proud to help catalyze these collaborations to bring new solutions to patients faster and more equitably."
SU2C has long championed research at the intersection of disciplines through its SU2C Convergence® program, which brings together engineers, physical scientists, and cancer biologists, as well as its SU2C Catalyst® initiative that engages industry in accelerating collaborative research. These efforts have fostered groundbreaking work that combines data science, molecular biology, and patient input to drive discovery. By embedding patient advocacy into every stage of the research process, SU2C ensures that cancer advancements remain focused on real-world impact.

About Stand Up To Cancer
Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C) raises awareness and funds research to detect and treat cancers with the aspiration to cure all patients. SU2C is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and was initially launched as a division of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Established in 2008 by media and entertainment leaders, SU2C utilizes these communities' resources to engage the public in supporting a new, collaborative model of cancer research, to increase awareness about cancer prevention, and to highlight progress being made in the fight against the disease. As of April 2024, more than 3,100 scientists representing more than 210 institutions are involved in SU2C-funded research projects.
As SU2C's scientific partner, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and a Scientific Advisory Committee, led by William G. Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., conduct rigorous competitive review processes to identify the best research proposals to recommend for funding, oversee grants administration, and provide expert review of research progress.
Current members of the SU2C Founders and Advisors Committee (FAC) include Katie Couric, Sherry Lansing, Kathleen Lobb, Lisa Paulsen, Rusty Robertson, Sue Schwartz, Pamela Oas Williams, and Ellen Ziffren. The late Laura Ziskin and the late Noreen Fraser are also co-founders. Julian Adams, Ph.D., serves as SU2C's president and CEO.
