Stanley Martin Homes -- First Regional Builder to be Named RESNET Energy Smart Builder
RESTON, Va., March 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Solidifying their position as the area's leader in green building practices, Stanley Martin Homes announced that they have been selected by the Residential Energy Savings Network (RESNET) as an Energy Smart Builder. This prestigious designation denotes Stanley Martin's commitment to having every single home they build rated by the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index. HERS ratings serve as the energy "report card" for homes, similar to a miles-per-gallon (MPG) rating for a car. One strong distinction is that when it comes to HERS ratings, the lower the score, the better energy performance.
For example, according to RESNET, a standard new home is awarded a HERS rating of 80, while older, less energy efficient homes, generally score 100+ ratings. Based on the thirteen most recently rated homes, Stanley Martin has an average HERS rating of 60, making these homes 20% more energy efficient than the standard new home and 40% more energy efficient than an average older home. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that Stanley Martin is able to achieve these energy scores despite building considerably large homes. At 6,543 finished square feet, the Sutton model at their Huntleigh at Creighton Farms community in Aldie, VA, is one of the largest homes Stanley Martin has built in recent years and it scored a HERS rating of 62 – still significantly lower than similarly sized homes built by their competitors.
When Stanley Martin made a strategic decision to commit to green building, it required a "building program that was completely different from what had been done in the past," says Mike Cleary, Vice President of Production and Purchasing at Stanley Martin. Cleary continued, "Stanley Martin, in conjunction with our trade partners, had to approach the whole house as one integrated system, as opposed to independently functioning systems, which is a huge change from the way homebuilders have done business in the past." It is this tremendous change that will result in high performance homes, lower energy and environmental costs for their homeowners, and also why the Reston based builder is the only regional homebuilder to have earned the distinction of RESNET Energy Smart Builder.
