State Museum of Pennsylvania Announces January Highlights
HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for January 2013:
Emancipation Proclamation Exhibit and Lecture: In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, a rare copy of the document signed by President Abraham Lincoln will be on display at The State Museum of Pennsylvania from Jan. 12 to Feb. 3, 2013. The proclamation copy is on loan to the museum by the Union League of Philadelphia. The State Museum will kick-off the exhibit entitled "Emancipation: Lincoln and His Proclamation" with a special presentation by author Harold Holzer on Friday, Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m. The program, which focuses on Holzer's book, Emancipating Lincoln: The Proclamation in Text, Context and History, is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation. The event is free and open to the public and offers attendees the opportunity to preview the exhibit.
Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration: Nate Gadsden's Writers Wordshop will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration on Saturday, Jan. 12, at The State Museum from 2 to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Pennsylvania Watercolor Society's 33rd Annual International Juried Exhibition: This exhibition features the top 120 paintings chosen from nearly 600 entries. It includes works from the United States, Hong Kong, India and Canada. Paintings by Watercolor Society founding member Nicholas Ruggieri will also be on display. They were recently donated to The State Museum's permanent collection by the Patriot-News. The exhibit is on display through Feb. 3, 2013.
Special Art Exhibit: "Where There is Light" is a multi-disciplinary exhibit organized by the Susquehanna Art Museum, featuring photographs by Kevyn Bashore, sculpture and painting by Freiman Stoltzfus and glass sculptures by Through the Fire Glass Studio, Aspen Glass Studio and Katherman Glass Studio. The exhibit is on display through Feb. 15, 2013.
3rd in the Burg – Artists Conversations: The State Museum will host a special edition of its popular insiders' art tours for Harrisburg's "Third in the Burg" arts and entertainment event on Friday, Jan. 18, 6:30 p.m. Awarding-winning artists and Lancaster County-based teachers Deb Watson and Richard Ressel will discuss their featured works as well as other traditional and emerging art perspectives showcased in the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society's Juried Exhibition. The tour is free and open to the public. "Third in the Burg" is a partnership of galleries and businesses celebrating local artists and their work on the third Friday of each month.
The State Planetarium: Bigger, Brighter, Bolder! The State Museum presents its newly-upgraded "Planetarium XD," featuring the latest state-of-the-art technology. Shows in January include:
"Legends of the Night Sky: Orion" (pre-K to grade 2)
Narrated by Aesop the Owl and Socrates the Mouse, this fully animated cartoon takes a light-hearted look at the myths and stories associated with the winter constellation Orion, the great hunter and how he and his hunting dogs came to be in the night sky.Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m.; Saturdays, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Sundays, 1 p.m.
"Ice Worlds" (grade 4 and up) In travels to the Arctic and Antarctic regions of our planet, "Ice Worlds" examines the ecosystems that live and thrive there and see how their survival is connected with our own. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, noon and 2 p.m.; Saturdays, noon and 2 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.
Planetarium shows are $2 per person, in addition to general admission; free to State Museum Affiliate Members.
The State Museum Store: The State Museum Store is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Purchases support the ongoing educational mission of The State Museum of Pennsylvania.
