State Policymakers to Examine Future of Sports Betting at Miami Meeting of Legislators from Gaming States
MIAMI, Nov. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A series of debates on the future of legal sports betting in the United States has taken place this month in forums from New York to Washington, DC. Those debates will culminate at the January 5-7, 2018, Winter Meeting of the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS), when policymakers at the highest levels of state government will meet to discuss the ramifications of this critical issue.
"The future of sports betting is the dominant issue in gaming across the nation, and is arguably the most important gaming issue that lawmakers and industry officials must confront in 2018," said Ohio Sen. Bill Coley, a NCLGS officer who recently participated in a NCLGS-sponsored forum at Sports Betting USA in New York. "NCLGS is rising to the occasion by making sure our members fully grasp all its ramifications."
"Congress and the US Supreme Court are discussing this issue and will be making important decisions, but ultimately the most important decisions will be made in statehouses across the United States," said Rep. Helene Keeley of Delaware, a recent past president of NCLGS.
Keeley chairs the NCLGS Committee on Casinos, which will examine the implications of Christie, Gov. of NJ, et al. v. NCAA, et al. and NJ Thoroughbred Horsemen v. NCAA, et al.
Coley chairs the Committee on State-Federal Relations, which will discuss whether the true potential of sports betting in the United States will be realized when players can wager via the internet/mobile devices.
The topic will also be infused throughout other sessions at the three-day NCLGS Winter Meeting, which will also include:
- Legislative committee sessions, including Lottery, Responsible Gaming, and Pari-Mutuel
- Three general sessions, including two Masterclasses presented by the International Masters of Gaming Law
- Women in Gaming Keynote Luncheon
- Kickoff Keynote from American Gaming Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman
- Welcome Reception
Winter Meeting registration is now open to the public at www.nclgs.org/meetings.html. The conference website includes the full conference agenda, as well as information for special attendee hotel rates at the host Hyatt Regency Miami.
