Statement by Minister Leitch on International Women's Day

OTTAWA, March 8, 2015 /CNW/ - The following is a statement by the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, on the occasion of International Women's Day, March 8, 2015.

March 8^th is International Women's Day. Each year, this occasion provides Canadians with the opportunity to appreciate the women in our lives and celebrate their achievements and their extraordinary potential.

This year's theme Strong Women. Strong World. Improving Economic Opportunities for All reminds us all of the vital contribution that women make every day to the economic life of our country.  It also highlights the importance of ensuring that every woman has the opportunity to help create prosperity for themselves and their families.

That's why the Government of Canada is committed to taking actions that promote economic opportunities for all Canadians, including women. If it's good for women, it's good for the economy, and that's good for Canadian families.

Through Status of Women Canada, our Government has invested $153 million in 750 community-based projects that meet the needs of women, young women, and girls.

The Government of Canada has also committed to keeping our streets and communities safe for all Canadians. More than 30 measures have been enacted into law to ensure that violent criminals are held accountable, and victims of crime are given a stronger voice.

Our Government passed legislation that improves the status and rights of Aboriginal women, children, and families. This includes amendments to the Canadian Human Rights Act, the Gender Equity in Indian Registration Act, and the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act.

Internationally, Canada's top development priority is improving maternal, newborn, and child health, which is why the Prime Minister hosted the Saving Every Woman, Every Child Summit in May, 2014. This initiative continues to improve the health of women and children in the world's poorest countries.

This International Women's Day, I invite all Canadians to join us in celebrating  the outstanding contributions of all Canadian women who support their families, enrich their communities, and contribute to making Canada a great place to live. When women succeed, Canada succeeds.
