Steelman to Keep Focus on Fiscal Discipline
SPRINGFIELD, Mo., July 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Republican candidate for the US Senate, Sarah Steelman, today released a new television advertisement highlighting her role in instituting terror-free investing. It can be viewed online here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez0CmfXMOFI
The HSBC banking scandal may be new to some, but Steelman was seeking out shady bank investments as early as 2005. That was when, as Missouri State Treasurer, Steelman instituted a zero-tolerance policy for investments in Iran and other countries that supported terrorism. According to The Wall Street Journal, "Ms. Steelman embraced the antiterrorism issue early on in her term, which began in January 2005. She started by examining the backgrounds of the broker-dealers employed by the Missouri state treasury. She says she fired two European banks after learning of their business ties to Iran" (6/14/2007). As a result, Steelman divested funds from UBS and BNP Paribas.
Due to Steelman's leadership, Missouri created the first terror-free fund in the country. More than 23 states have followed by adopting laws that compel pension plans to divest themselves of holdings in companies that do business with terrorist nations.
As treasurer, Ms. Steelman was also instrumental in overseeing Missouri's $19 billion in annual revenue and managed over $3 billion in long- and short-term investments in the state's portfolio. In that role, Steelman maintained Missouri's AAA bond rating. Today, only 13 states retain this sought-after S&P rating.
Steelman is a fiscal conservative and free market economist and who believes in lower taxes and smaller government. Her goals in Washington include:
- Implement real tax reform – closing loopholes and lowering the rates
- Reduce the capital gains tax
- Reduce and eliminate regulations by cutting programs
- Repeal ObamaCare
- Increase domestic oil drilling and build more domestic refineries
- Require the Federal Reserve to implement sound monetary policy
Ms. Steelman's campaign for the GOP nomination to take on Sen. Claire McCaskill, is one of the most closely watched races in the country. Recent Rasmussen polling shows Steelman leading McCaskill by 51% to 39%, the greatest margin of any of her seven primary opponents.
Steelman received her Masters in Economics from the University of Missouri - Columbia and in addition to serving as Missouri State Treasurer, has been an adjunct professor of economics at Lincoln University, economist for the Department of Revenue and a Missouri State Senator.
