Strong Employment Growth for Higher Education in Q2 2016

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Aug. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The number of jobs in higher education increased 1.8 percent in Q2 2016, the largest second quarter growth since Q2 2012, according to a recent report from HigherEdJobs, the leading job and career site for higher education professionals.

According to an analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data by HigherEdJobs, the 1.8 percent gain in higher education employment during the second quarter represents an increase of approximately 31,300 college and university jobs. The U.S. economy added jobs at essentially the same rate as higher education during Q2 2016. As a result, the market share of higher education jobs compared to all U.S. jobs was unchanged compared to last year.

This is the second quarter in a row for strong employment growth for higher education.  Growth during the previous quarter, Q1 2016, was the largest first quarter increase since Q1 2013.  

The report also found that ads for open positions in academia were up 4.0 percent during Q2 2016.  While positive, the growth rate for higher education job postings was much slower than a year ago when they were up 14.7 percent. And for the first time in at least three years, regardless of quarter, job postings for part-time positions declined during Q2 2016, albeit by a small percentage.

Drilling down further into HigherEdJobs' postings trends, advertisements for both full-time and part-time faculty declined in Q2 2016. However, the number of postings for full-time and part-time administrative and executive positions continued to increase.

The report analyzes the most current data from BLS and HigherEdJobs' posting trends from roughly 860 colleges and universities that have continuously subscribed to the company's unlimited posting plan for four years and, therefore, are able to post all of their job openings at no additional cost.
