Strong Girls, Strong Canada: Leaders from the Start - Canada Celebrates Women's History Month 2012 and the First-Ever International Day of the Girl

OTTAWA, Oct. 1, 2012 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, called on Canadians to celebrate Women's History Month 2012 - on the theme Strong Girls, Strong Canada: Leaders from the Start - and the first-ever International Day of the Girl.

Women's History Month is celebrated during the month of October because it was on October 18, 1929 that women were legally recognized as "persons" under the law.

"I encourage all Canadians to celebrate the historic contributions of girls during Women's History Month and to join together to commemorate the first annual International Day of the Girl," said Minister Ambrose. "I am proud the Government of Canada led the international community in establishing an International Day of the Girl and I am delighted that during Women's History Month, we will celebrate girls as Leaders from the Start."

Through Canada's leadership, world-wide momentum has grown to ensure girls get the recognition they deserve. The message is simple: girls' rights are human rights; the sooner in life girls know their rights, the greater the chance they will be able to exercise them.

For 20 years, Women's History Month has showcased the vital role that women and girls in communities across Canada have played in shaping Canadian history. During October, girl's roles and achievements in Canada's history and development will be highlighted, as well as the challenges and opportunities girls have faced over time.

"Support for girls and their basic human rights is vital for healthy communities," Minister Ambrose added. "In other words, Strong Girls help to build a Strong Canada - a nation that is safe and prosperous."

Canadians are encouraged to take an active role in celebrating Women's History Month. Activities take place across the country.
