Stroock Hosts Sheinkopf and Stone in Forum on Presidential Politics

NEW YORK, Sept. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP presented a Government Leadership forum today on presidential politics, featuring Henry (Hank) Sheinkopf, president of Sheinkopf Communications, and best-selling author and political strategist Roger Stone.  

Robert Abrams, former New York State Attorney General and chair of Stroock's Government Relations Practice Group, and Jerry Goldfeder, Stroock special counsel, author of "Election Law and the Presidency" and election law professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Fordham Law School, moderated the program.

Though Stone has represented Republicans and Sheinkopf Democrats during their lengthy careers, both agreed on what it would take for either candidate to win. Stone said, "I don't see an insurmountable lead any time soon.  They are locked in a death struggle that will be solved in the electoral college." 

Though Hillary Clinton has more paths to success, especially via the electoral college, "anyone who can predict the election is wrong," Sheinkopf said.  "The map is fluid, and incremental moves that pinpoint targeted voters will get a candidate over the line."

With the first debate imminent, Stone predicted that Trump will not practice with mock debates.  "What makes you think Trump will prepare?" he asked the audience of several hundred. "The only thing predictable about Trump is his unpredictability." And while expectations of Trump may be low at the debate, "there is a danger of coming in too strong against women, like an unguided missile."

Stone's advice for Clinton?  "Better to attack than defend."

Sheinkopf noted that Trump can pull out voters who have been out of the process. "People vote when they have more intensity about the candidates," he said.

A Stone prediction: "Expect Julian Assange and WikiLeaks to release additional Clinton emails, which could affect the race."

A Sheinkopf prediction: "The new brokers of politics will be the money guys."
