CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- SurgiBox Inc. announced the successful deployment of its SurgiField System in Myanmar (Burma), where frontline medical teams used the portable surgical technology to perform life-saving procedures in active conflict zones. In a breakthrough demonstration, a Burmese doctor utilized the system to treat a 20-year-old airstrike victim in a makeshift medical space near the frontlines.
The portable SurgiField System, composed of a sterile surgical enclosure inflated with HEPA-filtered air, enabled the surgical team to establish a clean, safe surgical field in a hidden building under constant threat of discovery. Using only a mobile phone for lighting, the surgeon successfully performed a wound debridement procedure, removing debris and damaged tissue that could have led to life-threatening infection.
"Training these extraordinary medics and doctors to work under such challenging conditions was both humbling and inspiring," said SurgiBox Co-Founder Sashidhar Jonnalagedda. "They immediately understood that SurgiField wasn't just another piece of medical equipment – it was a fundamental shift in what's possible. They can now bring surgical safety to their patients wherever they are, rather than requiring patients to reach a hospital that may not exist or may be unreachable."
Karen Bernstein, Global Partnerships Director for SurgiBox, added: "Establishing this partnership and seeing the deployment through with local NGOs in East Burma was deeply meaningful. Their affiliated medics and doctors serve communities facing not only the ongoing conflict but also everyday emergencies like complicated deliveries and trauma injuries. When they immediately requested as many SurgiFields as they could get, we knew the technology had met a critical need."
The Burmese trauma surgeon, whose name cannot be revealed for safety concerns stated: "In conflict medicine, we're always improvising, but this felt like having a real operating room materialize around my patient. That's the difference between losing someone to infection days later and giving them a fighting chance to heal."
The training and deployment was made possible with local partners including Mrs Neichu Mayer and NGOs based in East Burma. The initiative was supported by Creating Hope in Conflict: a Humanitarian Grand Challenge.
