Susman Godfrey announces the recipients of its 2013 1L Women and Minority Trial Lawyer Fellowships
HOUSTON, April 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Susman Godfrey is pleased to announce the five recipients of its 2013 1L Women and Minority Trial Lawyer Fellowships. Each fellow will spend two weeks at one of Susman Godfrey's offices across the country and receive a stipend. Susman Godfrey selected these fellows based on their academic records, experiences, and interest in the role of diversity in the legal profession.
New York, New York – Y. Carson Zhou
Y. Carson Zhou attends law school at Columbia University, and earned his B.A. and M.A. in History from the University of British Columbia. Before attending law school, Zhou worked for the Human Rights Advocacy Center in Accra, Ghana. There, he composed a proposal for reforming affirmative action policies aimed at promoting women's participation in politics for the Constitutional Review Committee of the Ghanaian Parliament. He is fluent in Mandarin.
Dallas, Texas – Emily Whitcher
Emily Whitcher is a first-year student at Harvard Law School. Emily was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Bioengineering. She also received an M.S. in Bioengineering and was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. At HLS, she serves as a member of the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology, the Women's Law Association, and the Texas Club.
Houston, Texas – Thomas Mendez
Thomas Mendez attends The University of Texas School of Law. Before law school, Mr. Mendez founded The Paideia Institute where he conducted inter-disciplinary college preparatory programs for diverse, educationally motivated high school students. Mr. Mendez graduated summa cum laude from the University of St. Thomas with a B.A. in International Studies and minors in Spanish and Latin American & Latino Studies.
Los Angeles, California – Nicole Marquez
Nicole Marquez attends Stanford Law School, where she serves as an associate editor on the Stanford Journal of International Law and is a member of the Women of Stanford Law, Stanford Latino Law Students Association, the Asian Pacific Islander Law Students Association, and the Native American Law Students Association. Ms. Marquez has a M.A. from the John Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and a B.A. from Stanford University.
Seattle, Washington – Amro Jayousi
Amro Jayousi attends the University of Michigan Law School. Before law school, Mr. Jayousi served as a diplomat and unofficial spokesperson for the Palestine Mission to the United States. Mr. Jayousi graduated from Chico State University, where he received his B.A. in Political Science, along with a minor in International Relations minor, and served as President and CEO of the student government.
