SEATTLE, Jan. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was published on January 1, 2011, by Shafeen Charania, author of the synthesis blog, winner of the 2008 Weblog award for best new blog, and Time.com's 25 best blogs of 2009.
America is an incredibly generous nation; despite the tough economic times, she gave an astonishing $5,637 per person! There are 980,000 registered nonprofits that filed IRS returns and they received a total of $1.74 trillion last year!
Most people give because they are looking for a way to make a difference, to see improvement for those less fortunate than them. But with almost a million nonprofits, are there really that many organizations capable of creating sustainable improvement?
Most .orgs form to address symptomatic issues, offering at best some form of palliative help – yes we might bring water to people who are thirsty this year, but what happens next year? The $1.74 trillion wasn't well spent if that's all that happened.
If we applied a curative vs. palliative approach, we'd make it more difficult to form a nonprofit, and ask the larger foundations to lend their marketing weight to showcasing the most sustainable and successful .orgs, so that Americans' generosity resulted in eliminating problems once and for all.
