Take Back Express Provides Secure Collection for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Feb. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Take Back Express, (www.takebackexpress.com) a manufacturer of secure collection receptacles for unwanted prescription drugs, announced its support of the eleventh National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The event, hosted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and state and local law enforcement agencies, will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The DEA will coordinate collection sites across the country for the public to drop off excess, unused and expired controlled substances and other medications.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there was a 2.8-fold increase in the number of deaths from prescription drug overdose from 2001 to 2014.

"Take back events encourage residents to clean out unused and expired medications from their homes and deliver them for safe disposal. Once safely disposed they can no longer cause an accidental overdose, be stolen for illegal use, or be put in the trash or flushed down a toilet, contaminating the environment," stated Ed Gottlieb, Chair of the Tompkins County Coalition for Safe Medication Disposal and Industrial Pretreatment Coordinator for the Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Facility. 

"To make take back more convenient than the DEA twice a year events, communities might choose to do what our local coalition, and many others, have done by encouraging law enforcement agencies to install drop boxes for a year-round disposal option," said Gottlieb. "The law enforcement agencies in my county did not have space to fit any of the commercially available drop boxes. We partnered with Take Back Express to design a narrow profile box that fits into tight spaces while maintaining a large capacity to minimize the frequency of emptying. The result was the Slimline Medication Collection Unit. We have been using these receptacles since 2013 and are very satisfied with their quality and performance."

Local law enforcement agencies can participate in the Take Back Initiative by registering their site with the DEA and staffing the four hour event. The DEA program has collected over 5,525,000 pounds of unused, expired or unwanted drugs since it began in 2010.
