Independent Committee launches "No Lame Duck" pledge

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, a certified letter from Danny Tarkanian was delivered to Sen. Harry Reid's state office.  Tarkanian, Chairman of 1001 Reasons to Vote Against Harry Reid, asked Sen. Reid to pledge to voters that he would be accountable to them in November and not stall controversial and divisive votes until the "Lame Duck" session.

The text of the letter is below:

Dear Sen. Reid:

Repeatedly, Americans have rejected liberal legislation such as card check, union pension bailouts and cap-and-trade. You are on record as supporting a Lame Duck session of Congress to pass unpopular legislation and advance a liberal political agenda.

Today, I want to call on you to reconsider your position and pledge not to convene a Lame Duck session of Congress.

Congress should do everything it can to complete its work before November and to demonstrate statesmanship by voting on tough issues before the election, not waiting until they are no longer accountable to voters.

Subverting the will of the people by overriding their democratic voice is simply wrong.

I urge you to pledge to the citizens of Nevada that you will not participate in or convene a Lame Duck session of Congress for any reason other than national security. You can return the signed pledge to the address below.

The letter includes a pledge which read as follows:

I, Sen. Harry Reid, , pledge that I will not participate in, or convene, a Lame Duck session of Congress for any reason other than matters of national security.

Tarkanian commented, "Sen. Reid's threat of a Lame Duck session is a dangerous one that underscores his refusal to be accountable to the will of the people.  Postponing legislation which will have a direct and immediate impact on our economy to be voted on after the November election is a cynical move designed  to allow legislators to campaign on one promise but vote another way if they lose their re-election.  We deserve to know exactly where our elected leaders stand on issues like Cap and Trade, Card Check, income tax increases or funding for additional bailouts before we head to the polls.  Nevadans deserve better."
