TD Bank's commitment to its workforce and the communities it serves resulted in many achievements in 2011, including:
- Community giving: In 2011, the TD Charitable Foundation donated $16.2 million in its local communities, including $2.5 million through its Housing For Everyone competition to create, rehabilitate or maintain affordable housing. TD Bank complemented this with an additional $7.4 million in community sponsorships -- a total of $23.6 million to non-profit organizations from Maine to Florida.
- Environmental leadership and advocacy: TD Bank remains one of the few banks in North America to be carbon neutral, and in 2011 opened the first net-zero energy bank location in the U.S. in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., an energy-efficient and LEED Platinum-certified building with 400 solar panels that will produce 100 percent of the building's annual energy needs. TD Bank employees also planted trees in Boston, Jacksonville, Fla., and Philadelphia - TD Tree Days - to create greener and healthier environments in underserved urban areas.
- Providing an inclusive workplace: TD Bank believes every one of its employees should feel comfortable in the workplace and reach their full potential. TD Bank was named one of The Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality in the U.S. by The Human Rights Campaign for the third year in a row.
- Commitment to education and financial literacy: TD Bank's annual Summer Reading Program encouraged more than 40,000 children to read over the summer -- a 37% increase over 2010 -- while teaching them the value of saving money. TD Bank awards each child who reads at least 10 books with $10 in a new or existing Young Saver account.
Additionally, TD Bank's WOW!Zone, a free online and in-school financial literacy program for grades K-12, reached 96,000 students, bringing the program's total participation to more than 900,000 since its inception.
"Taking an active role in supporting the communities where we do business is at the core of the TD Bank philosophy," said Elizabeth K. Warn, President of the TD Charitable Foundation and Senior Vice President of Community Development at TD Bank. "We are proud of our role as leaders in environmental stewardship and workplace diversity as we continue our commitment to supporting affordable housing initiatives, financial literacy, education and the environment."
