Taylor Greenberg Named Awardee of the Steinger, Iscoe, & Greene Law Scholarship for Child Advocates
Child advocate is excited for the $1,000 award and plans to blaze trails in child advocacy
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Oct. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Steinger, Iscoe, & Greene founding partner, Michael Steinger, and the attorneys with whom he works believe passionately in championing justice for child victims of abuse, abandonment, and neglect and have dedicated a large portion of their practice to representing abuse victims.
In that vein, the Steinger, Iscoe & Greene Law Scholarship for Child Advocates was created to honor law school students who are survivors of child abuse or who have dedicated their time and talents to protecting child victims of abuse, abandonment, and neglect. This year's scholarship awardee, 23 year-old Taylor Greenberg, shared her experiences serving as a Guardian ad Litem for Leon, Seminole, and Pinellas counties in Florida.
A Guardian ad Litem (GAL) is a specially trained, court-appointed advocate who solely and objectively represents the best interests of child victims of abuse, abandonment, or neglect. These volunteers serve as the voice of the child in an overburdened child welfare system.
Though the GAL's age requirement is 21, Greenberg completed the training at the age of 20, anxiously awaiting the opportunity to be "…given the responsibility and privilege to advocate for the best interest…" of children in her community. She took her first case on her 21st birthday and has advocated for 16 children ranging in age from 9 months to 16 years.
Greenberg's advocacy efforts also extended to her work as an Orlando area Pathways to Success Team Member with a Title I educational pilot program through AmeriCorps. She intends to complete law school and then use all she has learned to work at the state and, eventually, national level to implement policy changes specific to children's rights.
Founding firm partner Michael Steinger says, "While the damage that abuse causes can be life-long, a dedicated lawyer is in a unique place to serve as an ally to those most in need of advocacy." He goes on to say "Ms. Greenberg, at such a young age, serves as a champion for so many. She is truly remarkable."
Greenberg sums up her experience by saying, "For me personally, there has been no greater gift than advocating for a child."
To be eligible to apply for Steinger, Iscoe & Greene's essay-based Law Scholarship for Child Advocates, applicants must either be accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited college, university or law school program and maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA as evidenced by official transcripts.
