TD Bank Commits to Protecting Forests and Reducing Its Paper Usage
In partnership with The Nature Conservancy, TD Bank to protect approximately 214 acres of critical U.S. forest habitat.
CHERRY HILL, N.J. and PORTLAND, Maine, Oct. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, today announced that it plans to protect approximately 214 acres of critical forest habitat as part of the bank's TD Forests program (www.td.com/forests). In partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the bank will protect oak-hickory and hemlock-northern hardwood forests in New York's Finger Lakes region, and oak-hickory-cabbage palm and upland mixed forests in Central Florida.

TD Forests is a North American initiative of TD Bank and its parent company, TD Bank Group (TD). The program has two goals:
- Reduce the bank's paper usage by at least 20 percent by 2015
- Grow the area of protected forest habitat
The TD Forests program will increase the amount of forested lands protected and cared for by The Nature Conservancy and the Nature Conservancy of Canada by an average of two football fields a day over the next five years. In a year, it will protect an area larger than New York's Central Park.
In New York, the bank will elevate forest conservation by bringing a piece of nature and wildlife to the busy streets of the Big Apple. Throughout October, New Yorkers will interact with a digital wall of virtual forests at the TD Bank store on 14th Street and 5th Avenue, and experience scenes of nature through iconic viewfinders that will travel between high-visibility locations in Manhattan.

In a recent survey of Americans living within TD Bank's Maine to Florida footprint, more than 90 percent of those polled said that protecting forests and natural ecosystems was important to them. A majority (57 percent) strongly believe forests and natural areas play an important role as places for leisure and recreational activities.

TD also purchases enough energy credits from sources like wind and solar to offset 100 percent of the electricity the bank uses throughout its Maine to Florida footprint. Through an employee engagement program, the bank addresses demand for using less paper and empowers employees to take up the TD Forests challenge in their own communities by planting trees through annual TD Tree Days events.
This October, approximately 475 trees will be planted by more than 450 TD employee volunteers at TD Tree Days events in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Greenville, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Miami; New Haven, Conn.; Perth Amboy, N.J.; Portland, Maine; and Washington, D.C.
