Teal, Becker & Chiaramonte, CPAs, P.C. Cyber Security Incident
ALBANY, N.Y., July 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- On February 21, 2018, Teal, Becker & Chiaramonte, CPAs, P.C. (TBC) was alerted by New York State Department of Taxation and Finance ("NYSDTF") that approximately 50 fraudulent personal tax returns were filed for 2017 under TBC's electronic filing ID number. External cyber security firms conducted extensive forensic analyses and determined that TBC's data restoration and backup stored in an offsite, cloud-based storage location maintained by a third party was the subject of a ransomware attack. TBC has been advised by the experts that TBC's own network shows no indication of a compromise. Due to the ransomware exploit impacting TBC's data backup/restoration service, an unauthorized third party may have had access to certain client's personally identifiable information (PII) including some combination of names, addresses, social security numbers and other financial information.
