TechInsights and Teardown.com analyze the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

OTTAWA, Ontario, Sept. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- This September, Apple launched their newest flagship smartphone products, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, making a long anticipated move to larger screen devices to compete directly with Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 and LG's G3. TechInsights' Teardown.com has put both new iPhones under the microscope to see how their costs compare.

Preliminary analysis of the iPhone 6 Plus estimates it costs $242.50 USD to build - an increase of about 15% more than the iPhone 5S. The estimated combined cost of Apple's new A8 processor with Qualcomm's MDM9625M modem (confirmed 20nm and likely dual sourced fabrication using TSMC's 20 nm process or Samsung's 20nm process) account for $59.50 of the preliminary CoG.  The confirmed Toshiba 19 nm process NAND flash account for $9.00, and the 2x nm DRAM from Samsung, another $5.00, while the 5.5" display / touchscreen assembly costs another estimated $51.00.

The larger screen was not the only departure from previous iPhone models, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus represent Apple's first foray in the world of contactless payment using Apple's new Pay program. Enabling this is the inclusion of an NFC IC, NXPs's new NFC controller the PN548, with a secure element die, and a Touch ID button for access control.

For the iPhone 6 the preliminary display / touchscreen cost about $41.50 with the iPhone 6 total CoG to be approximately $227.00. The increase in build cost was expected considering the larger display, expanded cellular coverage, the addition of NFC, and a larger battery. Some key notes on the assembly included our analysts observing that the board design and the use of 'tried and true' chipsets allowed Apple to maintain a high margin on the devices.
