Telairity Upgrades Flagship NexGen BE8600 Contribution Encoder with 10-bit 4:2:2
New mode adds to unit's existing capabilities: high-quality and low-bitrate HD and SD in 8-bit 4:2:0 mode, and high-bitrate 8-bit 4:2:2 mode for contribution quality HD
SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Telairity, a global leader in encoding technology, today announced an upgrade to its flagship H.264/AVC contribution video encoder, the BE8600. A versatile Go-anywhere, Do-anything real-time encoder, the system is designed for backhaul, broadcasting, cable casting and IPTV.
In keeping with its status as one of the industry's premier H.264 contribution encoders, the BE8600 now complements its previous 8-bit 4:2:2 encoding mode with a new 10-bit 4:2:2 mode.
4:2:2 encoding preserves high color fidelity in source video by keeping twice as many color bits as are retained in 4:2:0 compression. Holding other factors constant, the extra "chroma" bits boost bitrates by one-third. Raising RGB (Red-Green-Blue) primary color channels from 8-bits to 10-bits multiplies the available color palette by a factor of 64, from about 16M "mixed" colors to over a billion. This improvement requires a further 25% increase in bitrates.
For example, a 15Mbps 4:2:0 stream needs to be raised to 20Mbps to accommodate the additional chroma bits retained in 4:2:2 encoding, then further increased to 25Mbps to enable "giga-color" 10-bit mode.
According to Harlan McGhan, vice president of marketing for Telairity, this latest improvement in the BE8600 is just the next step in an on-going progression of upgrades to Telairity's NexGen encoder line.
"Our NexGen BE8600 system was designed with a lot of headroom, in the expectation that it would continue to be enhanced over its lifetime. From the customer viewpoint, the best thing about this steady stream of improvements is our policy of making all new features, like 4:2:2 10-bit mode, available to existing customers at no additional cost. Free upgrades come automatically, as part of our customer-centric policy of including life-of-unit remote support and access to the latest firmware release, in the purchase price of every encoder we sell."
Other new NexGen features now under development include passing RP188 time code triggers and KLV metadata, and an upgrade from 8 to 16 channels of audio per video channel.
Both the half-width BE8600 contribution encoder and full-width BE8650 paired encoder/modulator system are on display April 24-27, during the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention, held in Las Vegas, Nevada. To see the Telairity systems, please visit the booth of Telairity's latest partner company, Primecom Technologies, LLC, located in North Hall at number N3233SUL. For more about the Telairity-Primecom relationship, see the press release "Primecom Technologies, LLC, Partners with Telairity for H.264/AVC Encoders."
Telairity's BE8740 4-channel distribution encoder also can be viewed at the NAB convention, in the Video Clarity booth, located in Upper South Hall, SU12413.
