Teradata Awards FIRST College Scholarship

ATLANTA, May 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- To encourage students in careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, Teradata (NYSE: TDC), the analytic data solutions company has awarded 10 college scholarships to students who are members of For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) robotics teams.

"Students involved in FIRST gain knowledge and experience not only in academic subjects, but also in teamwork and the rigors and realities of professional careers," said Susan Baxley, Teradata community relations director. "We're pleased to support these scholars and leaders in their college education and wish them great success."

The 2012 winners of the Teradata FIRST college scholarship program are participants in a Teradata-sponsored FIRST robotics team. These high school seniors were selected based on their demonstrated leadership skills in school or their community and their intention to major in a science, technology, engineering or math discipline at an accredited four-year college or university.

In addition to the $1,000, merit-based scholarships, Teradata's support for the FIRST program includes both regional and team sponsorships of the FIRST Robotics Competition program in states where Teradata has significant offices, and Teradata employees serve as volunteers to help these teams in the design and development of their robots. Teradata also provides financial sponsorship and volunteers for FIRST Tech Challenges and the FIRST Lego League.

The winners are:

California

Forrest Boyd, of Poway, CA, plans to attend Baylor University, in Waco, TX, where he will major in mechanical engineering. Boyd is a senior at Poway High School, where he has been active in Team Spyder FIRST Robotics Team 1622, and teaches a LEGO Mindstorms class. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the California Scholarship Federation. An Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America, Boyd is the son of Michael and Tracy Boyd.

Mishan Golshan, of Saratoga, CA, will major in mechanical engineering. He is a member of the Funky Monkeys FIRST Robotics Team 864, and volunteers as a student mentor to FIRST Robotics Team 3482. A senior at Westmont High School, Campbell, CA, Golshan is also on the dean's list at West Valley College in Saratoga and was named an AP Scholar with Honor by the College Board. He is the son of Medhi and Roselynn Golshan.

Georgia

Matthew Clark, of McDonough, GA, will attend Gordon College in Barnesville, GA, as a computer science major. Home schooled, Clark is a member of the Robugs FIRST Robotics Team 4076. He is the son of Crockett and Georgia Clark.

Ethan Everett, of Johns Creek, GA, will major in computer engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He is president of the Techno Titans FIRST Robotics Team 1683, and an Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America. Everett is a senior at Northview High School in Johns Creek, where he is editor of the school newspaper. He is the son of Pat and Patti Everett.

Helen McDonough, of Roswell, GA, is planning to attend Benedictine College in Atchison, KS, where she will double major in mechanical engineering with a focus on physics and in music composition. She is a member of Soup FIRST Robotics team 1848, and a participant in the FIRST Tech Challenge. Currently a senior at Regina Caeli Academy in Norcross, she is the daughter of Greta McDonough and the late James (Jim) McDonough.

North Carolina

Raveena Chhabria, of Greensboro, NC, will major in bio-chemistry as a pre-medical student at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. She is a member of Triple Strange FIRST Robotics team 1533. A senior at The Early College at Guilford in Greensboro, she was named to the dean's list and has presented chemistry research to the Guilford College Undergraduate Symposium. Chhabria was a participant in the Health Profession Recruitment and Exposure program at UNC-Chapel Hill, and earned an honorable mention for literature in the National PTA Reflections Program contest. She is the daughter of Monesh and Ritu Chhabria.

Courtney Edwards, of Greensboro, NC, plans to attend Hampton University in Hampton, VA, where she will major in chemistry. She is active in the Triple Strange FIRST Robotics Team 1533, and plays piano and violin. A senior at The Early College at Guilford in Greensboro, Edwards is a member of the National Honor Society was named to the dean's list. She attended the 2011 Governor's School of North Carolina and is a Science Olympiad participant. She was named an AP Scholar with Distinction by the College Board and she was a National Achievement Program finalist. Edwards is the daughter of Charles and Hilda Edwards.

Mark Stepnowski, of Greensboro, NC, will major in mechanical engineering at Auburn University in Auburn, AL. He is active in Team Prion FIRST Robotics Team 3215 and is a member of the Boy Scouts of America. Stepnowski is a senior at Grimsley High School in Greensboro where he competed as a member of the school's Quiz Bowl team and was a National Merit Finalist. He is the son of Richard and Martha Stepnowski.

Ohio

Joshua Adkins, of Vandalia, Ohio, will major in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. A senior at Butler High School in Vandalia, Adkins is the captain and founder of the Innovators Robotics FIRST Robotics Team 3138, and captain of the Dayton Bombers Youth Ice Hockey Midget team. He plays alto saxophone for the Englewood (Ohio) Civic Band. He is the son of Mark and Lisa Adkins.

Brandon Miller, of Dayton, Ohio, will attend Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN as an engineering major. He is active in the Innovators Robotics FIRST Robotics Team 3138. A senior at Butler High School in Vandalia, Miller plays in the Ohio Music Education Association Honor Band and in the school pep band, and is also a member of the honor roll and the National Honor Society. He is the son of Robert Miller and Terri Walters.
