Term Limits for America launches massive national campaign for Term Limits Amendment
WASHINGTON, June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Term Limits for America, a non-profit organization, has launched a massive nationwide effort to impose term limits on members of the U.S. Congress. This will be accomplished by bypassing the traditional Constitutional amendment process and going around Congress. After all, expecting Congress to vote for a term limits amendment is foolish and will never happen. Famously, a sitting member of Congress compared it to expecting a chicken to vote for KFC.
"Left or Right, Liberal or Conservative, Republican or Democrat, Term Limits for Congress is the ONE thing that all Americans can agree on. This is not a partisan issue. People on both sides of the political aisle are fed up, frustrated, and tired of feeling powerless," said Mike Dewey of Term Limits for America ("TLFA"). "Finally, we have a concrete plan for passing a term limits Amendment that does NOT involve Congress. Article 5 of the Constitution provides for a direct route to the state legislatures and the American people. We are seeing Americans of all political beliefs responding to this plan with great enthusiasm."

Few Americans know that term limits for the President were not in the Constitution, and were the result of the 22nd Amendment. Notably, Congress supported that amendment, which was adopted in 1951. Even fewer people know that ever since the passage of the 22nd Amendment limiting the President, the average term in Congress has exploded and is now the longest in history. The longer they are in office the more invincible they feel, and that sense of invincibility makes them unaccountable.
Amazingly, 42% of the current Congress have been in office more than 20 years! Despite historically low approval ratings, Congress gets re-elected more than 80% of the time, an all-time high. The ten longest serving members average more than 39 years in the House, and more than 32 years in the Senate. This is a clear abuse of power, and the 'game' is rigged against the American voting public. And the American public is sick and tired of it.
Jim Bearden of Term Limits for America pointed out, "Mike Dewey and I are dear friends but we couldn't be any more different politically. We don't agree on anything, but we agree on this. We figured if two people like us could find common ground with Term Limits for Congress, then America could come together to get this done. It really isn't Republicans vs. Democrats; sadly it has become the American people vs. Washington. The American people need to win this one, and get this amendment passed."
The first step in the Term Limits plan involves getting Americans to sign an easy, online petition at http://www.termlimitsforamerica.org/sign-our-petition/. TLFA is on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Term-Limits-for-America/468393766578974), and Twitter (@termlimitsusa), and has enlisted a dedicated, growing group of volunteers to help America engage on this issue.
