Texas Children's Hospital announces new chief of the division of pediatric surgery

HOUSTON, Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Renowned pediatric surgeon Dr. Jed Nuchtern has been appointed as chief of the division of pediatric surgery at Texas Children's Hospital. Nuchtern, whose appointment was effective Sept 18, will continue his roles as pediatric surgeon with Texas Children's Cancer Center and as professor of surgery and pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. An eminent leader in the field of pediatric surgery for nearly 20 years, Nuchtern has distinguished himself in a variety of research, clinical and academic roles. His research program involves translational and clinical research aimed at developing new treatments, particularly for neuroblastoma. His primary research is directed toward identifying the pathways through which molecules affect neuroblastoma tumor progression. He is the author of more than 80 book chapters and publications in various academic and medical journals and is a recipient of numerous honors and awards including the American College of Surgeons Faculty Research Fellowship. He has been named one of America's Top Doctors by Castle Connolly and Best Doctors in America for five consecutive years. Most recently U.S.News & World Report recognized him as a Top Doctor in 2011.

Board-certified in pediatric surgery and surgical critical care, Nuchtern received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, a master's degree in chemistry from Harvard University and he earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. After completing his general surgery residency program at University of Washington, he pursued a research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Nuchtern is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics-Surgical Section, the American College of Surgeons and the Association for Academic Surgery. He is also a member of the American Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons and the International Society for Pediatric Surgical Oncology. He currently serves as vice chairman for the Surgical Discipline Committee and the Neuroblastoma Disease Committee for the national Children's Oncology Group, a 222 institution cancer clinical trials group,
