The Bullying Academy, an Online Anti-Bullying Curriculum for Schools, Awarded the Townsend Press and DonorsChoose.org Prize

One of 15 of 628 Entries in the Ashoka Changemakers Activating Empathy International Competition

DAVIE, Fla., June 26, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Bullying Academy has been announced as a prize winner in the Townsend Press In-Kind Prize category of the Ashoka Changemakers Activating Empathy competition. In collaboration with DonorsChoose.org, the Townsend Press Prize is awarded to the top five solutions by a U.S. public-school teacher, student, or administrator that advance the mastery of empathy in a way that addresses bullying. The Bullying Academy was awarded a $5,000 prize in the form of DonorsChoose.org charitable credits.

The Bulling Academy was one of 15 entries that were finalists for the Townsend Press In-Kind Prize. The Activating Empathy competition was entered by 628 innovators from 74 countries. The founding of the Bullying Academy in 2011 was inspired by the needs of our digital youth generation and how they learn and experience the world. We reached 50,000 4th-8th graders in 1,000 schools during our first year of operation, with at least one school district in every state participating. This online resource is quickly becoming the leading web-based, interactive program designed to help parents, students and teachers deal with the dangers associated with bullying and cyber-bullying. 

The Bullying Academy does not require any additional software or extensive training. Schools register with the organization's website and students immediately have access to the program. The Bullying Academy provides a professionally developed curriculum and grade appropriate content to engage students through a scavenger hunt composed of lessons and learning links, as well as utilizing quizzes which function as assessments.  The program has been designed with a pre- and post-quiz so that participants can measure what was learned about bullying and its ramifications.
