CIGC Head of Research to Present on Absorbable versus Nonabsorbable Sutures in Vaginal Cuff Dehiscence
WASHINGTON, Feb. 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Center for Innovative GYN Care® (CIGC®) founders, Dr. Paul MacKoul, MD, and Dr. Natalya Danilyants, MD, announced today that Dr. Louise van der Does, Director of Research & Public Policy, accepted an invitation to present at this year's ENDO Dubai conference. The results of a retrospective study on suture material titled, "A Retrospective Review of Vaginal Cuff Dehiscence: Comparing Absorbable to Nonabsorbable Sutures," will be presented on Feb. 23, 2019, at 11:45 a.m. local time, at the Hotel Intercontinental Festival City in Dubai.
The results of the CIGC analysis suggest that the use of nonabsorbable sutures (which are often used in pelvic support procedures) may be an effective approach to prevent vaginal cuff dehiscence (VCD), a potentially fatal event in which abdominal pelvic contents are expelled through the vagina. According to the data, at 90 days post-hysterectomy, there were no patients in the nonabsorbable group and 11 patients in the absorbable group who experienced spontaneous, complete VCD. While patients with nonabsorbable sutures needed to undergo a second procedure under anesthesia to have the sutures removed, the risk of having spontaneous VCD was almost 2.5 times higher in the absorbable group.
The data, therefore, suggest that the use of nonabsorbable sutures may be an effective approach to preventing spontaneous cuff separation, especially in patients who may be at greater risk for VCD. The biomechanical properties of suture material, which have not been previously explored in any other study, are of immense importance, given the significant morbidity associated with vaginal cuff dehiscence.
